Abstract:Uvod: Pandemija covida-19, razglašena marca 2020, je močno obremenila zdravstvene sisteme in urgentne oddelke po svetu, povzročila hitro globalno širitev virusa in zahtevala izredne ukrepe.

Title:The workload of medical staff in the first and second wave of the COVID epidemic in the fast track area of the emergency department
Abstract:Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, declared in March 2020, significantly strained global healthcare systems and emergency units. Healthcare professionals dealt with increased workloads and stress, leading to physical and emotional exhaustion, necessitating urgent response and crisis management. Methods: In our study, we merged quantitative and qualitative approaches to assess healthcare staff workload during the pandemic in 2021/22. It involved analyzing outpatient records and conducting semi-structured interviews with medical personnel to understand work conditions during the epidemic. Results: In the quantitative part, we analyzed outpatient records: before the epidemic 2,172 patients/hour, first wave 1,301, second wave 1,881. In the qualitative part, which included interviews with 20 healthcare workers, challenges in triage were highlighted, and the burdens and adaptations of the medical staff during the epidemic were described. Discussion and conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, a decrease in non-urgent patient visits was observed in the Rapid Response Unit (RRU), reflecting a change in patient behavior. Additionally, the workload of healthcare staff was higher during the pandemic, despite the reduced number of treated patients, due to the need for intensive adaptation to new health protocols and changing working conditions.
