Title:Current state and possibilities for the inclusion of design thinking in the secondary school teaching of hospitality and tourism
Abstract:Due to changes in the economy and the tourism industry it is important to prepare students, the future workers in tourism and hospitality, to be trained to work in this field already during schooling. Nowadays, it is important to include more active teaching methods, with which students through their own activity get to know new learning material. With the help of these methods, students can also reach higher levels according to the Bloom’s six-level taxonomy scale. The higher levels that students reach through the teaching process, the more different knowledge and skills they have. An active learning method that encompasses all levels on the Bloom Scale is also design thinking. By using this method, students have the opportunity to learn analytical thinking, critical thinking, self-evaluation, how to seek ideas and implement them and make prototypes. The master thesis explores the possibilities of introducing the design thinking into classes at secondary tourism and hospitality schools. With the help of semi-structured interviews, ten teachers, who teach professional modules at three different high schools for tourism and hospitality, were interviewed. On the basis of the analysis, it was found that the introduction of design thinking as a teaching method would be highly desirable, due to the changes in the economy and a new generations of students. During the implementation of the method certain challenges could arise, mainly related to prior knowledge of the students, their motivation to participate and the time period of the implementation of the method. The process itself is long-lasting and would be more suitable for project work than for regular classes.
