Title:Influence of cover time on strawberry harvest
Abstract:In 2023, an experiment in a strawberry plantation in Zrkovci was conducted to determine whether the timing of covering strawberries with plastic tunnels affects the strawberry yield. 'Clery' strawberries were selected for the experiment. A portion of the plantation was covered early (on January 31, 2023) and another plantation late (on April 22, 2023). Harvesting the early-covered strawberries started on May 7, 2023, and finished on June 1, 2023. The late-covered strawberries were harvested from May 27 to June 9, 2023. After the harvest, the average number of fruits per plant, their average weight, and the average weight of a single fruit were calculated. Favorable weather conditions in the fall of 2022 influenced the high average number of fruits per plant. The weather conditions in the spring of 2023 had an impact on the different fruit development between the early and late-covered strawberries. It was found that the timing of covering the strawberries in spring 2023 affected the average number of fruits. The early-covered strawberries had approximately 20 % more fruits on average compared to the late-covered strawberries. The average weight of fruits per plant was higher in the early-covered strawberries. The harvesting period was longer for strawberries that were covered earlier. The timing of covering did not affect the average weight of the strawberries.
