Title:Resilience of family businesses during times of crisis
Abstract:The thesis explores the factors of resilience in family businesses during times of crisis, with a focus on the impact of succession, innovations, and adaptability. The research findings clearly show that despite the significance of succession for the continuity of a family business, this factor alone does not have an exceptional influence on its resilience during a crisis. On the contrary, innovations prove to play a crucial role in enhancing the resilience of family businesses in fluctuating economic conditions. Through an in-depth interview with management and an analysis of strategies employed by companies to overcome crises, it is evident that innovative thinking, agility, and adaptability significantly contribute to successful management of uncertainty and transitioning through crisis events. It is important to emphasize that in comparison to non-family businesses, family businesses have exhibited greater adaptability during times of crisis. In the concluding analysis, we learn that although succession remains a key factor for the long-term sustainability of a family business, innovations and adaptability emerge as the pivotal tools for preserving and increasing resilience during periods of economic crises. This is particularly clear in the comparison between family and non-family businesses, where family businesses demonstrate higher adaptability and better preparedness to cope with the challenges of a changing environment.
