Title:An empirical analysis of wage determinants in Estonia and Latvia
Abstract:The primary purpose of the thesis is an econometric analysis of the factors that influenced the movement of real wages in Estonia and Latvia during the observed period. The thesis is split into two parts. In the first part, we set up a theoretical basis for studying wage factors, conducted a review of existing empirical studies in this area, and presented the overall economic conditions and real wages in both countries being analyzed. The first part of the thesis, as described, forms the foundation for the second part, where it guided us in determining the factors that influenced the movement of real wages in Estonia and Latvia. In the second part of the thesis, we used the method of least squares to estimate the wage functions for Estonia and Latvia. We further tested the estimated wage functions for the adequacy of specification, stability of regression coefficients, and verified the validity of the assumptions of the least squares method. We found that unemployment, productivity and real wages in previous period statistically significantly influence the movement of real wages in the analyzed countries, however, the estimated regression coefficients in the wage functions of Estonia and Latvia indicate different degrees of influence of individual factors between the two economies.
