Povzame definicijo visokogorskega turizma njegov razvoj, obseg in izzive. S kvalitativno raziskavo v diplomskem delu raziskujemo, kako na problematiko, izzive in pozitivne lastnosti turizma v visokogorju reagirajo strokovnjaki in udeleženi v tovrstnih dejavnostih.

Title:Challenges of high mountain tourism in the Mount Everest region and suggestions for sustainable development
Abstract:High mountains have been attracting visitors since the prehistoric times because of their remarkable prominence. First motives for visiting were mostly gathering or finding shorter routes and later ones were to explore, compete in the race of reaching the world’s highest peaks, seeking a special experience, adventure and taking a break from daily routines. With the change in the motives for visiting also came a change in the type of visitors, which brought a number of adaptations and in some cases irreversible changes in vulnerable high mountain areas. The thesis focuses on those changes, adaptations and issues in the high mountain area of Mount Everest and addresses them through the three pillars of sustainability. Summarises the definition of the high mountain tourism, its development, range and challenges. It presents Nepal with Everest, the Sherpas, the Khumbu Valley and examines the negative and positive impacts of tourism on the local environment and life. Throughout the thesis we identify and research how tourism in the high mountains should be conducted in order to be compatible with the principles of sustainable development, and we look at examples of good practices from similar environments. With qualitative research at the end, we analyze how professionals and those involved in the high mountain/ adventure tourism react to the problems, challenges and positive features of tourism in those areas. The information gathered is used to propose possible solutions for more sustainable tourism in the Mount Everest region and other high mountain destinations.
