Title:The importance of Easter adventure experience in Botanic garden of University of Maribor for preschool children
Abstract:The natural environment is a challenge for children, as it always offers new opportunities for exploration, which require the child to be cognitively and motorically active. At the same time, the mysteriousness of nature stirs the child's imagination and arouses their curiosity, which can later lead to a love of nature. With fewer and fewer natural spaces available in urban centres, one of the more popular destinations for excursions are various natural environments. One such environment is a botanical garden, which in addition to relaxation also provides a variety of opportunities to learn new things. A growing number of botanical gardens organise various activities and tours for children, where trained educators direct children's attention to nature and all it has to offer. This was the objective of the Easter Adventure event at the Botanical Garden of the University of Maribor, where preschool children from rural and urban backgrounds were able to learn about or simply identify the plants that make up the festive Palm Sunday bundle (presmec) in Slovenia. After the event, oral interviews were conducted with parents and the participating children. Most children successfully named one plant from the Palm Sunday bundle, but more than half less of the children successfully named two or three plants. More than half of the parents could name all the plants in the Palm Sunday bundle, wherein the most frequently mentioned newly identified plants were thuja and spring erica. The parents' feedback on the event was overwhelmingly positive, with parents saying they enjoyed the event, found it interesting for their children, as well as educational.
