Title:Comparison of punishment in Denmark, Faroe Islands and Greenland
Abstract:In the diploma thesis, we focus on the comparison of punishment in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. In the first part of the thesis, we conducted a literature review using the descriptive method, on the basis of which the characteristics of crime in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland were determined. Moreover, we highlighted socio-economic and demographic factors that influence crime in selected areas. We found that in Greenland, compared to Denmark and the Faroe Islands, there is a high rate of sexual offences and crimes against life and limb. In the second part of the final part, we presented the punishment systems in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Through the analysis of statistical data on prison populations, we have presented the situation in the field of punishment, primarily of imprisoned persons. Greenland stands out in the context of Nordic exceptionalism, which can be seen in the low prison population rates, the frequent use of alternative sanctions and the progressive treatment of prisoners. Compared to Denmark and the Faroe Islands, which have one of the lowest prison population rates in the world, Greenland has a higher number of imprisoned persons per 100,000 inhabitants. The level of imprisoned persons is also influenced by the still present connection with the Danish judiciary and the greater violence of Greenlandic society compared to that in the Faroe Islands, which results in longer sentences. We found that the criminal justice system in Greenland, compared to the criminal justice system in the Faroe Islands, is more autonomous from the Danish one
