Title:Adaptation of prisoners to prison life
Abstract:Adjusting to the environment in which people live is crucial for their functioning. Prisoners must at least partially, if not fully, adjust to life in prison (prison rules, prison workers, prison environment, and other prisoners) during imprisonment. The process of a prisoner’s adjustment is complex. In the bachelor thesis, we explore two issues: “Which factors influence prisoner’s adjustment to life in prison?” and “How do deprivation and importation factors influence prisoner’s adjustment to life in prison?” We identified three large groups of factors that affect a prisoner’s adjustment to life in prison: individual characteristics, characteristics of the prison sentence, and environmental factors. Together, the mentioned factors form the deprivation and importation models, which hold an important role in understanding a prisoner’s adjustment to life in prison. Studies have identified prisoners’ social support, level of education, psychological condition, and previous convictions as the most important importation factors. On the other hand, researchers identified the following deprivations that prisoners face when they arrive in prison: lack of heterosexual relations, lack of safety, the problem of the maternal role among women with children, and lack of private space, goods, and services. Moreover, we have discovered that the two models should be researched in combination as this is the only way we can fully comprehend a prisoner’s adjustment to life in prison.
