Abstract:V pričujočem magistrskem delu smo analizirali mladinska književna dela, ki obravnavajo temo rasizem: na kakšen način je rasizem predstavljen, kakšen odnos do rasizma imajo književni liki in kakšne vrednote književna dela zagovarjajo. Ti pojmi so: stereotipi, predsodki, diskriminacija in toleranca oziroma strpnost.

Title:A review of racism in children's literature
Abstract:In this master's thesis, we analyse literary works for children that address the topic of racism. We paid special attention to how racism is portrayed, what kind of attitude literary characters have towards racism, and which values are being advocated in these works. In the theoretical introduction, we provide the definition of what racism is as well as the definition of all racism-related concepts. These concepts are stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and tolerance or acceptance towards other people. We described ethnic minorities, emphasizing the situation of the Roma people, migrants, and people of colour. We continued with the definition of what is taboo and how the topic of taboo is addressed in children's literature. We paid special attention to a taboo subject: human diversity. People are different because of their looks, religious beliefs, place of birth, and ethnicity. We presented the difference between multiculturalism and interculturalism and how these are portrayed in children's literature. We continued our analysis of realistic children's prose texts appropriate for elementary school students. All the works mentioned had the same central theme: racism. In our master's thesis, we concluded that most of the discussed works encourage tolerance towards others, understanding and acceptance of human diversity, as well as intercultural communication.
