Title:Geographical outline of Lendavske gorice region
Abstract:This master’s thesis presents a geographical overview of the Lendavske gorice region, focusing mainly on physical features and human activity in the area. Our stepping stone was Vladimir Bračič’s monograph of the region, which was written in the late 1980s. Our analyses include various data of all the settlements that lie on the Lendavske gorice hills, or at least border them. In the subchapter about agriculture, we used a slightly different approach, gathering data for the region’s cadastral zones, so we could compare it to Bračič’s agricultural analysis. The Lendavske gorice hills are our smallest wine hill region that lie in the easternmost part of Slovenia, near the Hungarian and Croatian borders. The area is bilingual, since the Hungarian language is equal to the Slovene. The percentage of the Hungarian population and consequently their activity level in the region have varied throughout history. Nevertheless, Hungarians have remained active in the region to this day. The region has always been highly dependent on the nearby city of Lendava, which has remained the centre of regional development. Most human activities and various services have always been stationed there. In the subchapter about population, we covered the demographical features of the area, mainly focusing on the time period after the year 2000. Since the aforementioned year, the region has been prone to stagnation and ageing of the population. On the bright side, there has been a rising number of people who have been able to obtain at least a high-school level of education. On the one hand, the Lendavske gorice hills are considered to be a viticultural region, so the area is covered with vineyards that spread across the whole hilly part of the region. In connection to that, there have been several problems which have had negative impacts on the total area of vineyards. On the other hand, agriculture is widely spread on the plains next to the hills, mostly outside the area’s major settlements, which is typical for the Prekmurje region. It is worth mentioning that some fields also spread to the hills’ ridges, mostly covering flat agricultural lands that are not covered with vineyards. Tourism has been gaining importance and is considered to be one of the most important industry sectors as of late. In the pre-COVID era, the area had been attracting numerous tourists before it all declined as the epidemic started. The most important tourist attractions are considered to be the spa in Lendava and the lookout tower Vinarium, which was built on top of the hills in 2015. Since its opening, the tower has attracted more than half a million tourists.
