Title:Specialized workers’ views on the treatment of prisoners
Abstract:In the thesis, research is focused on specialized workers’ views on the treatment of prisoners. The first part includes a presentation of the historical development of treatment ideology around the world and in Slovenia, criticism of the treatment ideology, and the Slovenian penal system. In the second empirical part, we present findings of the analysis of interviews with specialized workers in Dob prison, with the purpose of examining their role in the institution, their opinion about the efficiency of the treatment programs and their views on what motivates the prisoners to participate in the treatment programs. Interviews conducted at the beginning of 2022 showed that specialized workers are included in all areas of an individual’s life during imprisonment. They constantly monitor and lead prisoners and also encourage them in the rehabilitation process. We found that most prisoners are externally motivated to engage in the treatment programs, which means that they participate in the programs because of the benefits. At the same time, the ‘treatment game’ appears inside the institution, where prisoners act in accordance with the expectations of specialized workers in order to obtain benefits as quickly as possible. It is difficult to assess the effectiveness of the treatment programs, as no criteria have been established for measuring success, and each prisoner perceives the treatment differently. In prisons, professional workers try daily to encourage internal motivation in prisoners because this is the only way to make resocialization more successful.
