Title:Izzivi prevajanja metafor na primeru posodobljenih prevodov kratkih zgodb Edgarja Allana Poeja : magistrsko delo

Abstract:Prevajanje metafor je za prevajalca velik izziv. Metafora je literarna figura, ki je morda najkompleksnejša in hkrati najbolj kreativna tako za razumevanje kot za uporabo. O tem edinstvenem jezikovnem okrasu so razpravljali že v antiki. Čez čas se je razumevanje metafore pomaknilo iz spektra estetike in jezikovnega okrasa v spekter kognitivnega jezikoslovja ter človekovega mišljenja. Zlasti v 80. letih je raziskovalce zanimal predvsem kognitivni vidik metafore: kako odraža človekovo mišljenje, kakšni so mehanizmi njenega nastanka in katere funkcije igra ta figura v besedilih ter vsakdanjem jeziku, k čemur sta močno prispevali zlasti interakcijska in kognitivna teorija. S tema se je pomaknila stopnjo višje od estetskega in glede na določena stališča zgodovine nepotrebnega jezikovnega okrasa do filozofskega in kognitivnega pojava, vrednega samostojnega raziskovanja. Prevajanje metafor je posebno področje prevodoslovja, ki ga je treba obravnavati na specifičen način. Nekateri prevodoslovci so postavili določene strategije, ki so najprimernejše za prevajanje metafor, med njimi tudi Peter Newmark. V teoretičnem delu bomo obravnavali teoriji metafore ter posodobljanja prevodov, v empiričnem delu pa se bomo posvetili analizi metafor v treh kratkih zgodbah Edgarja Allana Poeja: Zlatemu hrošču, Vodnjaku in nihalu ter Padcu Usherjeve hiše. Analiza je pripeljala do zanimivih, a po svoje pričakovanih ugotovitev: prevajalci so se trudili ohraniti avtorjeve metafore in so ostali dokaj zvesti Poejevemu značilnemu temačnemu slogu. V nekaterih primerih pa so bili tudi kreativni; to potrjuje, da je prevajanje metafor pogojeno s prevajalčevima jezikovno spretnostjo ter izvirnostjo. Prav tako pa analiza potrjuje teorijo posodabljanja prevodov, saj so starejši prevodi zgodb bolj podomačeni kot novejši.

Title:The Challenges of Translating Metaphors on the Example of the Retranslation of Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories
Abstract:Translating metaphors presents a great challenge to a translator. A metaphor may be the most complex and creative literary device to understand and use. This unique linguistic feature was already discussed in antiquity. Understanding the metaphor has eventually moved from the spectrum of aesthetic and linguistic features to the spectrum of cognitive linguistics and the human mind. Especially in the 80s, researchers were particularly interested in a metaphor’s cognitive aspect: the way it reflects the human thought process, its mechanisms of creation, and its function in different texts and everyday language. Interaction and cognitive theory of metaphor, in particular, contributed to metaphor reaching a level beyond the aesthetic, and considering certain historical aspects, an unnecessary linguistic feature to the level of philosophical and cognitive phenomenon, worthy of an independent study. The translation of metaphors creates a specific field within translation studies, calling for a specific approach to research. Some translator scholars, including Peter Newmark, set certain strategies that are deemed to be the most appropriate for translating metaphors. The theoretical part thoroughly considers the theories of metaphor and retranslation, while the empirical part is dedicated to the analysis of metaphors of the retranslation of three short stories by Edgar Allan Poe: The Gold Bug, The Pit and the Pendulum and The Fall of the House of Usher. The analysis brought fascinating, yet somehow expected conclusions. The translators tried to preserve the author's metaphors and remained fairly faithful to Poe's characteristic, dark style. However, the translators were creative in certain examples; this particularly confirms the suggestion that translators should be linguistically skilled and creative when translating metaphors. It also confirms the thesis of the retranslation theory since older translations tend to be more domesticated compared to later translations of the stories.
