Abstract:Magistrsko delo analizira zgodovinska ozadja in okoliščine naročil baročne oltarne opreme v dveh novogradnjah zadnje tretjine 17. stoletja: nekdanji podružnični cerkvi sv. Roka in Boštjana v Cezanjevcih v župniji sv. Janeza Krstnika v Ljutomeru in sv. Duha na Stari Gori v župniji sv. Jurija v Svetem Juriju ob Ščavnici. Na podlagi že znanih in novo odkritih arhivskih virov, ikonološke in slogovne analize posameznih kosov opreme (oltarnih slik, kipov in ornamentike) podaja teze o naročnikih. Slogovne značilnosti oltarnih nastavkov, njihova vsebina ter njihovo stanje ohranjenosti so obravnavani z vidika konkretnih dogodkov in okoliščin, mdr. epidemije kuge, vpadov Krucev, prenosov in prenov opreme, življenjskih okoliščin naročnikov itd. Z arhivskim gradivom in novimi genealoškimi podatki o odvetnikih obeh cerkva, baronov Mauerburgov in grofov Wildensteinov, so podkrepljene teze o vlogi plemiških cerkvenih odvetnikov pri naročilih posameznih oltarjev.

Title:Historical contexts of commissions of baroque altars for the churches in Cezanjevci and at Stara Gora
Abstract:This master thesis analyses historical contexts and circumstances of the commissions of baroque altars and altar furnishings in two subsidiary churches from the late 17th century in the present-day Pomurje region: the church of Saint Rochus and Sebastian in Cezanjevci (in the Ljutomer parish) and the church of the Holy Ghost at Stara Gora (the parish of Sv. Jurij ob Ščavnici). Based on the known but also newly discovered archival sources, iconological and stylistic analyses of the individual pieces of furnishings (altar pieces, sculptures, ornament), it introduces hypotheses of their commissioners. Stylistic and formal characteristics of retables, their iconography and their state of preservation are discussed from the perspective of specific events and circumstances, such as plague epidemics, invasions of the Kuruc, transfers and refurbishing of altars as well as the significant life events of the commissioners. Archival sources and genealogical data are used to provide insight into the role of the aristocratic advocates (advocatus) of both churches, the Mauerburg Barons and the Wildenstein Counts respectively, in specific commissions. The role of individual family members is specified in this regard. The stylistic analyses of altar sculptures, altar ornament and altar pieces reveal a relatively high level of quality of artworks, which were either made by or closely connected with artists (sculptures and painters) in Graz. Moreover, the patron saints as well as the selection and placing of other saintly figures in all altars in both churches are analysed. Their selection reflects the generally popular saintly cults, those related with topical historical circumstances (e. g. plague), as well as personal preferences of the aristocratic commissioners.
