Title:Safety of elderly pedestrians in traffic
Abstract:The thesis presents an analysis of the traffic safety of pedestrians, especially pedestrians who are older than 65 years. The purpose is to determine the main factors that affect the traffic safety of pedestrians and elderly pedestrians, based on the analysis of traffic accidents for the period 2017-2021, and to emphasize the characteristics that have the greatest impact on the safety of elderly pedestrians. An analysis of crashes involving pedestrians of all ages demonstrated that the most common cause of all such crashes is failure to follow the right-of-way rule, and that most crashes result in minor injuries. A more detailed analysis, which takes into account only pedestrians over 65 years of age, proved that for this age group the most common cause of crashes are movements with a vehicle (as much as 27% of all crashes with minor, serious injuries and with a fatal outcome) and failure to observe the right-of-way rule (24 % of mentioned crashes). The analysis also highlighted that 67% of crashes resulted in minor injuries and 33% of them ended in serious injuries or death. If we focus on serious injuries of crashes and on those with a fatal outcome, the most common cause of this type of accident is failure to observe the right-of-way rule. A similar finding is made for older pedestrians. In the end, we also proposed possible measures to improve the state of pedestrian traffic safety, i.e. technical measures in the field of infrastructure, soft measures in the field of education and workshops to increase knowledge about traffic safety.
