Title:Physiological and economical aspects of different winter pruning intensities in sweet cherry (prunus avium l.)
Abstract:At the UAC Pohorski Dvor of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, University of Maribor in 2019 and 2020 an experiment in a sweet cherry plantation of ‘Regina’ and ‘Kordia’ grafted on Gisela 5 rootstock was conducted with intention to study the effects of winter pruning intensity on quantity and quality of the yield in the year of pruning and the year after as well as determine the economic efficiency of the production. Four treatments represented severe, standard and light pruning and control. With light pruning the crown was thinned, with standard pruning in addition to crown thinning wood in the upper part of the crown was rejuvenated and poorly fruiting branches were thinned, with severe pruning additional shortening of one-year old shoots to two vegetative buds was performed. Control treatment was not pruned. It was determined that in both trial years in case of ‘Kordia’ and in the year of pruning in case of ‘Regina’, yield quantity decreased with intensification of winter pruning, on the other hand share of marketable fruit as well as fruit diameter and weight increased. In the year after performed pruning cv. ‘Regina’ responded differently. Effect of pruning on internal fruit quality was not consistent; in case of cv. ‘Kordia’ intensity of winter pruning had no effect on internal fruit quality while in case of cv. ‘Regina’ severe winter pruning improved all observed internal fruit quality parameters in the year of the performed measure. Based on obtained results regarding fruit diameter, which conditions fruit market value, we discovered they are positively linked therefore lower yield, due to more severe pruning, can be compensated.
