Title:Placement and Socio-Economic Importance of Community Student Gardens at the University of Maribor
Abstract:The main goal of the Master’s thesis was to determine the importance of community student gardens in terms of analysing various socio-economic parameters. To achieve this goal we also needed partial goals, which were: to determine the level of interest in community student gardens among University of Maribor (UM) students, to determine the appropriate size of gardens according to the identified needs, conceptually place the gardens into appropriate spaces and design the conceptual design of an individual vegetable bed according to the expressed needs. Based on the last goal, an economic analysis was undertaken and revealed that if manual labour is omitted from the calculation and is evaluated as time spent on recreation or relaxation, the difference between the total cost and the value of the crop is in favour of growing crops in community gardens. A total of 2.4 % of the students enrolled at UM took a survey and 74.5 % of them were interested in gardening. It can be assumed that the economic aspect of student gardens is equally or less important than the social aspect among the student population, and that for UM students the economic aspect is more important than the social aspect. Such gardens are of great importance for their users in terms of health and social benefits and could lead to better academic achievements, insofar as the gardens serve as a pedagogical tool in knowledge transfer, research, socializing and recreation, as a space of connection between individuals and as a crossroads between modernity and tradition.
