Abstract:Obstajajo številni dokazi, da moški niso pripravljeni poiskati strokovne pomoči ob doživljanju duševne stiske. So očitne, vendar nezdravljene. Kvalitativne in kvantitativne študije so bile identificirane v dveh elektronskih bazah, in sicer PsyceArticles in PubMed, ki smo jih iskali marca 2020. Poleg teorije načrtovanega vedenja smo prepoznali številne teorije, ki nam poskušajo osvetliti in razložiti negativen odnos moških do iskanja psihološke pomoči.

Title:Men and seeking psychological help with mental distress
Abstract:There is ample evidence that men are reluctant to seek professional help when experiencing mental distress. Historically, men's mental health has long been a neglected topic of academic research, and it was only in the 1960s and 1970s that feminist researchers began to criticise the fact that women were more likely to be identified as mentally disturbed compared to men. Despite the fact that men are not psychologically healthier than women, they are less likely to seek psychological help (Courtenay, 2000; Vessey and Howard, 1993). Many mental illnesses in men go undiagnosed. They are evident but untreated. Research describes many of the barriers faced by men experiencing mental distress. They have an internalised masculine ideology that says men should be strong, tough, independent, which is definitely at odds with seeking psychological help. The aim of this paper is to conduct a systematic review of the literature and to answer the question of men's attitudes towards seeking psychological help when experiencing mental distress. What are the most important barriers that influence men's negative attitudes towards seeking psychological help and can we use the theory of planned behaviour to explain men's attitudes towards seeking psychological help. The paper is based on a review of the existing literature in the field of explaining the psychological help-seeking of men experiencing mental distress. Qualitative and quantitative studies were identified in two electronic databases, namely PsyceArticles and PubMed, which were searched in March 2020. After reviewing the articles and based on exclusion criteria, 46 relevant articles were included in the final analysis of the systematic review. We found that traditional masculinity ideology is an important barrier that affects men's attitudes towards seeking psychological help for mental distress. Furthermore, we identified a number of variables that indirectly influence negative attitudes. In addition to the theory of planned behaviour, we have identified a number of theories that attempt to shed light on and explain men's negative attitudes towards seeking psychological help. The traditional ideology of masculinity is a significant barrier to men seeking psychological help when they are facing mental distress. It is important to better understand men's attitudes towards help-seeking, to identify negative factors that further contribute to negative attitudes towards help-seeking, and to design interventions based on what is known that will contribute to more positive attitudes towards seeking psychological help.
