Title:Integration of ergonomic principles in solving the problem of labor shortage due to aging workforce
Abstract:The master's thesis deals with the connection between three problems that we are currently facing in Slovenia. On one hand, there is a shortage of manpower, on the other hand, we are faced with an aging population, and on the third hand, there are more and more health problems that are more often faced by older employees. A properly ergonomically designed workplace is the key to success and greater efficiency in companies. We were of the opinion that the appropriate ergonomic arrangement of workplaces is the key to the healthy aging of employees and to the elimination of their potential health problems, which in turn lead to absenteeism and presenteeism. For this purpose, we conducted an extensive statistical analysis, in which we included 80 respondents who are employed in various Slovenian companies. By analyzing the results, we found that the negative effects of inadequate physical factors, such as forced posture, repetitive movements, and poor workplace lighting, increase with age. We investigated which personal and psychosocial factors are most present among employees - age, fast-paced work and repetitive work. We also investigated the frequency of sick leave and its relationship with age. We have singled out the good practices of proactive ergonomics that employees need most for successful and efficient work, such as adequate and sufficient workplace lighting, flexible working hours and a greater number of short breaks. The empirical part confirms that employees would support the company's decision to invest in ergonomic workplace arrangements to improve well-being and productivity, raise the level of safety, and mitigate the consequences of employee aging. The main added value of the research work is in the proposal for improvement, in the design and presentation of the ergonomic model: "A model of the integration of ergonomics into the pillar of a modern organization". The effects of the model are positive for all employees, for management and the company as a whole. Employees feel better, are healthier, work in a safe environment, are more productive, and can age successfully in a healthy and active way. The model highlights the possibility of actively avoiding the problem of recruiting new staff and suggests ways to reduce costs due to lower levels of absenteeism and presenteeism. By following ergonomic principles, the company becomes more successful and efficient and, as a result, more competitive.
