Abstract:Zgodnje učenje samoregulacijskih veščin vodi v optimalen razvoj otroka. Otrok s pomočjo samoregulacije uravnava svoja čustva, misli in vedenja.

Title:The relationship between self-regulation and psychosocial problems in early childhood
Abstract:Early learning of self-regulatory skills leads to optimal child development. A child regulates his emotions, thoughts and behaviors through self-regulation. However, poorer self-regulatory skills and negative experiences in early childhood can contribute to the emergence of psychosocial problems. Self-regulation and psychosocial problems are important constructs which develop in early childhood. The aim of this master's thesis is to examine the relationship between self-regulation and psychosocial problems of preschool children in reference to their gender and age. The study involved 129 preschool children and an equal number of their parents. The measurement instruments used are the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire − SDQ, which tests the expression of psychosocial problems, and the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function − BRIEF-P, which is used to assess an individual's self-regulation. The results show self-regulation and psychosocial problems in early childhood are interrelated. Statistically significant differences are detected in the expression of self-regulation in reference to gender; girls had higher self-regulation when compared to boys. The study does not find a statistically significant difference in the expression of self-regulation between younger and older children. Only certain dimensions of self-regulation are statistically significantly correlated in reference to age. The study do not show a statistically significant difference based on gender in the expression of psychosocial problems. However, a statistically significant difference is found between younger and older children in the expression of psychosocial problems. The research provides insight into the importance of optimal development of self-regulatory skills which help children overcome psychosocial problems more easily and express more prosocial behavior.
