Abstract:V magistrskem delu smo predstavili sindrom Helen Irlen, kjer gre za težave s procesiranjem vidnih informacij v možganih. Raziskava magistrskega dela bo pripomogla k prepoznavanju sindroma Helen Irlen v slovenskem prostoru.

Title:Helen Irlen syndrome
Abstract:This master's thesis presents Helen Irlen syndrome (short: Irlen syndrome or IS) that refers to the problems with the brain's inability to process visual information. Visually impaired people too can suffer from this syndrome which can be alleviated either by using Irlen colored overlays or tinted glasses with Irlen spectral filters (Čelešnik Kozamernik, 2018). Although the preferred term used in this thesis is Irlen Syndrome, the disorder is also colloquially known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS). In this research six research questions have been posed, i.e. in which way Irlen syndrome affects the lives of individuals diagnosed with IS; case studies determining the connection and coherence between theoretical examples, describing Irlen syndrome; some practical examples of unexplored Irlen syndrome and their impact on the public perception of this phenomenon; professional training programmes, certifications and conditions for becoming a certified Irlen Screener and/or certified Irlen Diagnostician of Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome. The aim of the present thesis is to examine, in which ways Irlen syndrome affects the life of an individual, suffering from this condition and to raise public awareness of IS and its symptoms, which are manifested by the disorder itself in order to increase its proper identification and alleviate difficulties associated with it. For that purpose, a current study that includes interviews with both - parents of IS children and children with confirmed Irlen syndrome has been carried out. In addition three Slovenian IS experts were interviewed: a certified Irlen diagnostician, Mrs. Maja Volk as well as the two certified Irlen screeners, Mrs. Vesna Jurjec Žvikart and Mr. Jože Volk. The results of the current research in this thesis may lead to better and greater understanding and recognition of Helen Irlen syndrome in Slovenia.
