Title:The impact of gender role in ethics-based managerial decision making strategies in Serbia
Abstract:Ethical dilemmas are situations in which not only the ethical values we represent, promote and believe in are tempted, but our perseverance and determination, i.e. consistency in respecting the values we represent in the decision-making process, are also tempted. In this research paper we deal with the study of the integrity capacity of managers in the decision-making process based on ethical values. The purpose of this research was to examine discrepancy between managerial value systems and value system represented in manager’s decision-making strategies. The aim was to establish a model that can provide reliable and relevant data necessary to prove the existence of discrepancies between managers' value systems and the values represented in their decision-making strategies, a model by which we can measure the level of discrepancies so that we can prove that The level of Discrepancy is in a relation with Gender variable, but also with variables such as The level of ethical conduct of managers and Organizational culture. In the theoretical part of our research paper, we reviewed several key areas, starting with general definition of Ethic, Business Ethic and Organizational culture. To get to know the value system of managers we did a theoretical review of values that are recognised within corporate lieders, as well as the review of most relevant Inventories of Human values. In this part of our research, we reviewed several models that explain relation between Ethic and Decision-making strategies. The final chapter of our theoretical review was about previous research that were explaining differences and similarities of leadership strategies in a relation to gender. The empirical part of our research relied on a comparative analysis of data gained from managers and employees. For the purpose of collecting data, we used quantitative and qualitative statistical methods by using two questionnaires, and one interview. The surveys were realised using online survey platform 1ka.com, and for statistical analysis we used program IBM SPSS. The interview was realised mostly in remote environment by using videoconference clients such as Zoom and Messenger. Due to social differences that are manifested through socially conditioned circumstances of male and female personal development, we examine the gender variable as a factor of consistency in decision-making process based on a set of ethical values that a particular manager represents. Whether there is a discrepancy between the values that managers represent and the integration of ethical values into decision-making strategies, and whether the level of discrepancy between these two components differs in relation to the gender variable, are two key questions in this research paper. After doing comparative analysis of data gained from managers and employees, we found that there are discrepancies between managers’ value system and value system represented in their decision-making strategies. We also find that level of discrepancy is in the relation with Gender variable, but also in relation with variables Ethical conduct of managers and Organizational climate. We believe that our research gave an insight on how consistency of managers in aligning their beliefs and values with their strategies is important for making ethically based decision, as well as providing the starting point on researching factors that have causal relation with consistency.
