Title:Rehabilitation programs in prisons and their impact on successful reintegration and recidivism of convicts
Abstract:The rehabilitative model of punishing delinquents began to develop in the 1960s with a purpose of a more humane treatment of prisoners, but also because of the high rate of recidivism, which indicated the failure of the classical, punitive approach of punishing delinquents. The recidivism rate is one of the main indicators of how successful punishment of delinquents is but is not the only one. The rehabilitation model of punishment has its focus on individualization of punishment, which means that rehabilitation programs are chosen based on an individual's personality traits, needs and requirements. The goal of the model is to benefit the individual and to use the time of incarceration for their resocialization and rehabilitation, so they can successfully reintegrate back to society after their release. The wide range of existing rehabilitation programs in prisons around the world raises the issues of their effectiveness in reducing crime. In this master thesis we will try to describe the most common rehabilitation programs in prisons around the world, their positive and negative impact on delinquents, go through the history of punishment and the start and development of the rehabilitative model of punishment. We will connect all of the above with recidivism and other factors that impact the criminality rate. We will do all of that by reviewing already existing literature on that topic.
