Title:The role of parents in mobile phone use in primary school children
Abstract:The present master’s thesis is divided into a theoretical and empirical part and focuses on the examination of the role of parents in the use of mobile phones in primary school children. For the purpose of the research we formulated a survey questionnaire which was filled out by 194 parents of children who are attending the last triennium. The results show that most children received their first mobile phone between the ages of 9 and 12 and that the significant reasons behind those purchases are of practical nature. According to most parents, the use of mobile phone does not significantly affect their children; however, if there is an impact, it is negative. Even supposing most parents limit the time that their children spend on their mobile phones, many of them still do not. In addition to this restrictive parental mediation, active mediation is also common whilst supervision and technical intervention are less popular. Parents, as owners of their own mobile phones, spend, on average, more than two hours a day on them. Given that most parents do not use their phones in circumstances in which they prohibit their children from using them, we can conclude that they are trying to set a good example for their children.
