Abstract:Uvod: Namen zaključnega dela je bil predstaviti in proučiti, kako izmensko in nočno delo vplivata na kakovost spanja medicinske sestre.

Title:The effect of shift and night work on the sleep quality among nurses
Abstract:Introduction: The goal of the final thesis was to review how shift and night work affect a nurse's quality of sleep. Sleep is one of the body's physiological functions and is essential for the normal functioning of the whole body. Shift work is work that includes a continuous 24-hour activity. Shift work also includes night work. Due to shift work, problems arise because of insufficient necessary sleep, leading to poor sleep quality. Methods: We have systematically reviewed the scientific and professional literature according to the PRISMA guidelines. Critical analysis of the evidence was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklists. For the search, we have included the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect and CINAHL. The search was limited to correspond to the chosen topic, articles are not older than ten years and are freely available and published in full-text. Results: The final analysis included nine most relevant articles on the selected topic. Selected papers gave us a clear picture of the sleep quality of nurses performing shift and night work. We found that the majority of nurses have poor sleep quality. Sleep quality is even worse when nurses are on night shifts. Discussion and conclusion: Due to poor sleep quality, insomnia, drowsiness, and fatigue often occur among nurses. Nurses are prone to poor sleep quality, especially those who perform shift and night work. The selected field is insufficiently researched, especially in Slovenia. In the future, more research should be carried out on the quality of nurses' sleep to improve the quality of sleep and the implementation of shift and night work.
