Abstract:Analizi funkcije uvoznega povpraševanja države je bilo v mednarodni ekonomski literaturi namenjene veliko pozornosti.

Title:Characteristics of import demand in selected european economies
Abstract:The analysis of import demand of individual countries has received a great focus in the international economic literature. Recognition of the factors of import demand and the understanding of their influence has helped the policy-makers facilitate the practices that enable the macroeconomic stability and stimulate economic growth. Due to the different structural basis of individual economies affecting the trade, the explanatory variables of import demand vary from country to country. In this paper, we estimate a long-term import demand function for Italian, Spanish and French economies using quarterly data for the period 2000 to 2019. Our empirical estimates suggest that real income (GDP) is the main factor affecting imports in all three countries; we have expanded the function of the Spanish aggregate import with the industrial production; the French with import prices; and the Italian with terms of trade and the industrial production. The results indicate that in the long-term, income elasticity is positive, which is in line with the principles of the economic theory. We used the ordinary least squares method to estimate import demand. We presume that the OLS method guarantees consistent estimate of the import function and that OLS estimators are linear, best and unbiased.
