Title:Analysis of deradicalization programmes in europe and possibilities of implementation in slovenia
Abstract:Although studying radicalisation prevention and deradicalisation is a relatively new field, a number of the EU countries have in recent decades developed programmes to deal with the growing threat of extremism and radicalism – both religious and political. Radicalisation is considered to be one of the more pressing security challenges in modern society, becouse it can lead to violent extremism and consequently to radicalised individuals and groups, and it is also one of the major and rapidly growing risks in the European Union. In an attempt to curb radicalism and its negative consequences, a number of experts and researchers have begun to develop preventive measures, including deradicalisation. This, however, leads to numerous questions: can the current deradicalisation programmes be applied also to radicalised indviduals; does this require different approaches, and could these programmes help to reintegrate an individual into society? There are numerous disagreements regarding the efficacy of these programmes in responding to these challenges and what are the key components of such a programme. The process of deradicalisation and its success are crucial for security on the social, national, and international levels. This master's thesis studies the programmes developed by Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden and compares them in order to find as many similarities and differences between them as possible. It also compares the findings from the interviews held with Slovenian security experts. Since Slovenia has not developed a deradicalisation programme of its own, this master's thesis tries to use the interviews and analyses of the programmes developed by certain European countries to apply their best practices at the national level.
