Title:A Study on Vitamin B12 in the Diet of Present Day Humans and the Awareness of It among Vegetarians and vegans
Abstract:In the master's thesis, the awareness of vegetarians and vegans on the importance of vitamin B12 in the diet, their reasons for adopting their diet, the prevalence of the use of dietary supplements with vitamin B12 and the reasons for its use were studied. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire completed by 248 people, of whom 56 % were vegans, 22 % were lacto-ovo vegetarians, 9 % were ovo-vegetarians, 7 % were lacto-vegetarians and 6 % ate several different diets (predominantly raw vegans, 1 fruitarian and 4 people occasionally eating fish - pesco-vegetarians). As the most common reasons for adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet, respondents cited moral and ethical dilemmas (64 %); health consciousness prevailed in only a quarter of respondents. Of all participants, 72 % stated that they were taking a vitamin B12 supplement. Respondents cite diet and preventive use as the most common reason for taking this dietary supplement. Respondents are well aware of the importance of vitamin B12 in the diet and the consequences of its deficiency and there is a lack of knowledge about foods that contain this vitamin. The opinion that people who have a balanced, varied and healthy diet do not need dietary supplements, regardless of the way they eat, is undecided among the respondents. The assessment of this statement is statistically significant in relation to education (Χ2 = 35.87); higher education is associated with the awareness that dietary supplements are not necessary with a balanced, varied and healthy diet.
