Abstract:Diplomsko delo govori o vplivu sugestije na pričanje prič in ustvarjanje izkrivljenih spominov.

Title:Interaction between language and memory and creating false memories in eyewitness testimony
Abstract:My thesis discusses the impact of suggestion on witness testimony and the creation of false memories. Based on testimony errors, many people in the past have been convicted for a crime they did not commit. To prevent this from happening in the future, it is important to investigate, understand and also apply knowledge of human memory in criminal and court proceedings. Memory has been the subject of research for a very long time. The first one to study the process of forgetting was a german psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus. Much has been learned about memory since then. In general, memory is divided in three groups: sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Each of them have a different function and scope. They are all an important factor in creating long-term memories. These memories however, are not a complete representation of the events the person witnesses. Some details can disappear and so memory holes are created. Our brain tries to fill these holes with information, but during this process, false memories may occur. Suggestive questioning that hints at a specific answer plays an important role in creating false memories. If this happens, a person accepts and perceives this offered information as a memory of its own. This does not mean the person is lying in reporting such memories, nor does it mean that all the information that a person reports is inaccurate. In my dissertation I researched how the form of an asked question, that is suggesting a particular answer affects testimony. After playing a clip of a car accident, participants answered a series of questions. The results showed that the used verb, that indicated the speed of the moving vehicles, significantly influenced a persons' testimony. The verb smashed (»treščiti«) elicited higher speed scores than other verbs. However, no differences were found in reporting of the absence of broken glass and colours of the cars. I also researched how much are Slovenian police officers familiar with the issue of suggestive questions. Although my findings are a good predictor that police officers are aware of this, further research is needed in this area.
