Abstract:V zadnjih letih smo priča vse večjim migracijskim tokovom, kar pa na prebivalcih pusti svoj pečat. Tukaj smo odpirali številne, nekoliko globje teme, kot so mešanje kultur, odnos do migrantov, izključevanje migrantov, vprašanje identitete, zaželenost migrantov, stereotipi in predsodki, kriminalizacija migrantov, nestrpnost in ksenofobija ...

Title:Perceptions of migrants in Slovenia
Abstract:In the last few years, we have witnessed a surge in migratory movements, which has certainly left an impression on the population. What do we even imagine under the term “migration”? Some have a positive reaction to the word, others the opposite. Simply put, some people can react and adapt to the situation, while others have an issue with it. This is the discourse that we are writing about throughout the thesis, which introduces migration and the perception of migrants. This thesis is not meant to reduce the number of migrants, but rather achieve a greater acceptance of their otherness. In the beginning, we present the theoretical basics needed for understanding the thesis, and then we dive deeper into the perception of migrants. There we open a few more profound questions regarding the topic, such as mixing of cultures, attitude towards migrants, exclusion of migrants, the question of identity, stereotypes and prejudices, criminalization of migrants as well as xenophobia and intolerance. On top of that, there is also a personal confession of a migrant living in Slovenia. The hypotheses and the content of this master’s thesis also zoom in on the issue of different views and acceptance of migrants from the point of the educated population and the less- or non-educated population; the older and the younger population; and the difference in perception of different groups of migrants. In 2014, European Social Survey charted the opinions about migrants by the residents of different European countries, among them Slovenians. In the empirical part, our thesis analyses this research that has measured Slovenian public opinion on the issue of migrants with the help of statistical methods. The hypotheses posed at the beginning of the thesis, which reflect a personal perception of a negative attitude towards migrants and migrations, have all been confirmed. That means that both the currently available literature and the results of our analysis indicate a general unacceptance of migrants by the Slovene population. We hope and believe this thesis has managed to cover an important part of the modern research in the field of migrations.
