Title:Factors of volunteering among young people in north-east Slovenia: the role of economic, social and cultural capital
Abstract:The basic purpose of the master's thesis was to determine whether there are mutual correlations between the voluntary work of an individual and the cultural, social and economic capital of young people in north-eastern Slovenia. In the theoretical part, we defined the concept of volunteering, we studied the approaches to its exploration, as well as the legislation and statistics of volunteering in Slovenia. We examined the forms of capital according to Bourdieu and previous research in the field of the interaction between the three forms of capital and voluntary activities. In the empirical part, we presented the results of a survey conducted online with young people aged 15 to 29 from north-eastern Slovenia. We found out that the voluntary activity of young people is mostly influenced by cultural capital. Specifically, young people who are more involved in cultural consumption and show higher religiosity, as well as young people who are more educated, participate to a greater extent in voluntary activities. The decision to volunteer is also significantly influenced by parents with their own volunteerism and the consequent example to young people. We found out that the frequency of voluntary work is positively influenced by two factors of economic capital, namely the average monthly income of an individual and the ownership of residence. Somewhat surprisingly, our results do not show a statistically significant association between voluntary work and social capital factors. In north-eastern Slovenia, young people, according to their opinion, most often decide to volunteer to help and make others happy. They point out lack of time as the biggest obstacle to participation in such activities.
