Title:Life courses of childless women in middle adulthood
Abstract:Although motherhood is traditionally an important and highly regarded value and often perceived as a main mission for women, there is a growing number of women around the world who never become mothers. In Western cultures, at least one third of women are usually childless, but this number includes both women who are infertile or otherwise unable to become mothers, as well as those women who decide to be childless on their own. We focus on the latter in this thesis. In the MA thesis, we studied the life courses of women in middle adulthood who are childless because of their own choice. We researched how they made such a decision, what the critical life events or important life events that affected their decision were, what value orientations they pursued and how they made their decisions. We examined the occurrence of the stigma associated with their decision to live childless, and in what way it shows itself. The research is based on a qualitative approach based on the principle of grounded theory. We conducted 12 in-depth interviews. According to the obtained and analyzed results, we created 66 codes with the computer programme ATLAS.ti, 3 of which are smart codes (supercodes), from which we compiled five central concepts: time investments, turning points, stigma – pressures, decisions, parenting. Childlessness is never based on one single decision, it is the result of several decisions in many areas of an individual's life over time. We can stress the importance of a partnership and a strong representation of responsibility for positive relationships (to yourself, your family, partner, society, future). These guidelines include a combination of traditional and postmodern values. As social norms in society loosen, there is a lower level of experience with stigmatization, but for women, socially conditioned gender roles are still clearly set in the direction of motherhood.
