Title:Personal safety and spatial planning in healthcare institutions
Abstract:In line with current social trends, which lead to an increasing burden on the healthcare system, healthcare institutions face a number of organisational challenges. These are also related to ensuring safety and preventing security risks, as employees, patients and visitors are exposed to various threats. An overview of the systemic regulation in Slovenia shows that different approaches to the provision of safety and security are established in healthcare institutions. This is due to the lack of a unified system of standardisation and comprehensive solutions that would address safety and security in the healthcare system at the national level. The purpose of the master's thesis was to review the established standards and good practices and to investigate safety and security related deficiencies in Slovenian healthcare institutions. The focus was on the analysis of spatial design and use of security measures to ensure personal safety and security. Therefore, a three-part study was conducted, which included a survey among visitors and patients on the perception of security risks in the hospital, an interview with a security expert in healthcare and an analysis of hospital facilities by observation. The results have shown that there are some shortcomings in the provision of safety and security, which are also a consequence of the non-uniform application of standards at the national level. The findings suggest that personal safety is relatively well provided, while deficiencies are observable in the area of organisational safety and security culture, in the prevention of risks associated with the transmission of infections, and in the spatial design of institutions. Despite the improvements that have taken place in recent years, approaches to security are lagging behind the practices of more developed countries. The findings provide an understanding of current approaches to safety and security management in healthcare institutions in Slovenia and indicate the need for improvements. The results are primarily useful for healthcare managers, architects and space planners in planning practical improvements and developing safety and security standards.
