Title:Analysis of sugar beet production perspectives
Abstract:After the closing of the Ormož Sugar Factory farmers once more gathered to sow sugar beet on Slovenian land. Sugar beet is exported for processing to the Viro Factory in Virovitica (Viro d.d.) in neighbouring Croatia. This masters thesis presents in more detail the analysis of sugar beet production in Slovenia during the operations of the Ormož Sugar Factory and today, when sugar beet is once again grown on Slovenian soil. Sugar beet production in the past and present was researched on the basis of profession and other publicly available data. A questionaire was prepared and administered for sugar beet producers that operate both nowaday and during the operations of the Ormož Sugar Factory. It was assessed whether the economical viability was better during the operations of the Ormož Sugar Factory or nowadays. Results have shown that the economical viability was better during the operations of the Ormož Sugar Factory, as we have to export sugar beet to Croatia and therefore have no byproducts, on the top of that the purchase price is low and production costs are high. A SWOT-analysis for the case of sugar beet re-cultivation was also created.
