Title:Using media for intelligence purposes: covert operations
Abstract:The idea of an organization that controls the minds of individuals and the masses, pushing them toward a particular ideology and certain life choices, may seem like an absurd conspiracy or as science fiction. However, it is certainly not a surprise to some that corporations, organizations, and politicians can manipulate public opinion to fit a particular agenda. That includes government organizations, such as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which controlled and manipulated civilians' minds in the past. That conspiracy theory turned out to be true in the 1970s in the United States. Intelligence services have long been involved with journalists. This hidden activity of some journalists was culminated in the Cold War. The use of journalism for intelligence purposes is somewhat controversial. This practice leaves many foreign journalists suspected of espionage. Similar controversies have surrounded the use of anthropologists and archaeologists as a cover for intelligence operatives. As an example of early political propaganda, where the media cooperated with the intelligence service, is the Münzenberg apparatus. Willi Münzenberg was important factor at the beginning of the 20th century politics. As one of the organizers and founders of the Communist International (Comintern), and as a leader in the building of Marxist-Leninist power outside Russia, he played a particularly influential role in conspiracy, maneuvering, propaganda and other secret political activities in 1930s.
