Title:Forensic podiatry
Abstract:Footprints can be a very important means of proof in crime investigation and in criminal trails. As perpetrators are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of fingerprint removal, developing an area that focuses on footprints, footprints inside shoes, and their wear is crucial. The area involved in examining footprints and linking them to offenders is called forensic podiatry. As this is a relatively new and developing field, the thesis describes the main tasks and goals of the field of forensic podiatry. Requirements and training required for conducting forensic work in the field of podiatry and providing expert opinions in court cases are described. Like in other forensic fields forensic podiatry work involves monitoring mechanisms that help to increase the validity and reliability of the use of forensic podiatry in the courts. The differences and advantages between bare foot prints, footwear prints, sock prints are explained. The methods and procedures used to measure and take footprints and to process these measurements with computer programs are presented. A few words are also addressed to the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot, frequent diseases and deformities of the foot, which helps to make it easier to understand the whole process of human movement and foot adaptation to different shoes and surfaces. The advantages and disadvantages of the gait analysis, which has recently undergone a major development, are described. The development and advantages and disadvantages of specific footprint measurement methods, their quality and reliability in individualizing offenders and proving them in court proceedings are presented. With some examples from abroad, we have presented the usefulness of forensic podiatry and its suitability for use in litigation.
