Title:Black market with puppies and dog factories
Abstract:The black market with puppies is a problem of modern society, which has quickly developed into the third most profitable business in the world, right after the drugs and illegal weapon smuggling. Dog factories were supposed to start appearing after World War II, with the search for alternative sources of income for farmers. Puppy mills is the term that describes the mass breeding of dogs in difficult living conditions. Although there is no standardized legal definition for "dog factories", in 1984 it was defined as "a dog breeding where the health of dogs is ignored in order to keep costs low and maximize the profits". Most of the factories are located in Hungary and Slovakia, also many can be found in Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Romania. Dogs stunned in trucks are then smuggled in Italy and other western countries, and there is a growing demand for "purebred" dogs in Slovenia, which is why we also find more and more puppies coming from this industry. Dog breeders are focused on quantity rather than quality; their goal is to raise as many puppies as possible to maximize their income. As demands vary, for a particular type of dog breed, the breeders try to meet those demands, but when those dogs are not sold, most of them are euthanized or end up in an animal shelters. One of the largests society that is fighting against the black market of dogs, is called The Humane Society of the United States, and has branches present in more than 50 countries, fighting for puppies at every possible level, including the promotion of public awareness and education. They also cooperate with local authorities when called upon, to help them stop the most mollested puppies from dog factories. While the puppy industry produces millions of puppies per year, millions of puppies and adult dogs are being euthanized in shelters across Europe.
