Abstract:Izhodišče in namen: Demenca je resna bolezen, ki prizadene starejše ljudi in ogroža njihovo življenje. Posledici demence sta zmanjšanje in nezmožnost opravljanja osnovnih življenjskih aktivnosti. Izvedeni so delno strukturirani intervjuji. Rezultati: Analiza podatkov je rezultirala v dveh glavnih temah, in sicer; Soočanje z boleznijo in Kakovost življenja z osebo z demenco.

Title:Caring for a family member living with dementia
Abstract:Introduction: Dementia is a serious disease that affects older people and threatens their lives. The consequences of dementia are the reduction and the inability of performing basic life activities. Dementia affects the functions, such as memory, understanding, thinking, orientation, learning, and computational capabilities, and the ability of verbal expression and judgment. To live with a close person who shows the signs of dementia gradually and irresistibly is a great life challenge that regularly burdens the closest family members. In the bachelor’s thesis, we focus mostly on relatives who take care of a person with dementia. Within the framework of the research, we emphasize especially their experiences in this field. Research method: In the concluding part, the qualitative methodology was used. Semi structured interviews were performed. In the research, a sample of seven adult persons, i.e. family members of the persons with dementia, is included. Voluntary, they gave consent to participate. Thematic analysis of the text was used. Results: The data analysis is divided in two main themes; Cooping with the disease and the quality of life with a person living with dementia. Discussion and conclusion: Relatives encounter troubles when caring of the person living with dementia on a daily basis. They have difficulties in coping with their new roles. The research showed the necessity of ensuring social and other support of the family members who take care of the demented person because of protecting their health and the need to relieve their daily psychophysical stress in the process of the care.
