Abstract:Izhodišče: Poškodbe očesa so v svetovnem merilu pomemben vzrok za okvaro vida in predstavljajo veliko breme za zdravstveno varstvo. Uporabili smo deskriptivno statistično metodo analize podatkov.

Title:Knowledge of first aid for eye injuries among nursing students
Abstract:Background: Eye injuries are a major cause of vision impairment globally and represent a major burden on healthcare. They are divided by anatomy, cause, and method of origin. Emergency medical care can not be denied by a healthcare professional. In our research, we wanted to find out how well nursing students are aware of eye injuries and whether they would be able to provide first aid to a person with an eye injury, which will be of utmost importance to them in the future. Methods: The data for the empirical part of the research were obtained by interviewing 3rd year students and students who have completed their studies but not yet graduated, of nursing care at one faculty in Slovenia. Data was analyzed, grouped, and displayed using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Descriptive statistical method of data analysis was used. Results: The survey included 70 participants, 77 % of whom completed a secondary school of nursing. Most respondents would be able to properly handle chemical eye injuries (64 %), while knowledge of sunburned eye care (37 %), blunt eye injuries care (31 %), as well as handling foreign bodies in the eye (26 % non-penetrating, 34 % penetrating) was the worst. Respondents rated their own knowledge of first aid for eye injuries at 3.2 ± 0.8 (1 – worst, 5 – the best). They mostly want more education in this field (93 %). Conclusion: Upon completion of their studies, nursing students' knowledge of first aid for eye injuries is insufficient. Most of them correctly decided on the most important measures, but the percentage of properly handled injuries was too low. We would suggest first aid refresher courses in each year of study.
