Abstract:PLESALCI – TRENUTEK IN GIBANJE TEORETSKA IN KREATIVNA IZHODIŠČA ZA LASTNO FOTOGRAFIJO PLESALCEV je naslov magistrskega dela. V izbrani nalogi sta nas zanimali umetniška fotografija in fotografija plesalcev, ki jih določajo dela Alexeya Brodovitcha, Cornella Capa, Maria Giacomellija, Helmuta Newtona, Andréa Kertésza in Richarda Avedona. V skladu z nameni in cilji naloge so rezultat dela fotografije, ki so nastale v sodelovanju s solisti in z ansamblom Opere in Baleta SNG Maribor.

Title:DANCERS - MOMENT AND MOVEMENT THEORETICAL AND CREATIVE BASES FOR THE AUTHORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OF DANCERS
Abstract:The title of this Master’s Thesis is DANCERS - MOMENT AND MOVEMENT THEORETICAL AND CREATIVE BASES FOR THE AUTHORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OF DANCERS. It is divided into two parts, a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical part is contained within the first six chapters and focuses on the beginnings of the new photography era in art history context. In this new era, shorter exposure is possible, which allows the creation of technically more elaborate photography of motion. Special focus is given to the pioneers of photography of motion, with photography of dancers as a specific field of interest. Therefore, this thesis focuses on artistic photography and photography of dancers. It analyses current scientific discoveries in photography design as thematised by Geoffrey Batchen, Henri Bergson’s idea of motion as a transition from one still state to another, the state of motion as a visualization of a moment in picture, and motion in art as envisioned by Ernst H. Gombrich. At the same time, dancing was analyzed as the art of movement of the human body, the motion as the process of changing positions of the dancer’s body, and put into perspective by researching theoretical ideals of Vilém Flusser. This resulted in solid foundations for one’s own photography of dancers. The second, practical part, from chapter six to the final part of the thesis, focuses on the process of creating a photographic work and the problems with taking photographs. Different approaches to photography and the creation of photographs in the theatre were researched and analysed in regard to technical and aesthetic norms. The movement of dancers as a transition from one still state to another is shown in different moments, positions and in various ways with different lighting. This part also focuses on foresight or pre-visualisation, the right moment to capture a photograph of dancers of classical ballet, the lighting and the final image, which is dependent on the gradation of light. The portrayal of a certain dancing scene is very dependent on the hues used; if every hue from black through grey to white is captured, or if only grey hues are captured. This is why a zone system based on grey hues is included. Technical aspects of creating a photograph, such as different types of lighting and the gradation of light, are discussed. The characteristics of foresight, group and personal photographic portraits and special lightning techniques for full body photographs are put into focus. In line with the purposes and goals of the thesis, a collection of photographs was created in collaboration with ballet soloists and the dance ensemble of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor.
