Title:The experience economy : a focus on the heritage tourism product “Dežela kozolcev” (Land of hayracks) in Lower Carniola, Slovenia
Abstract:During the early days of today's highly developed tourism industry, the approach taken was purely economic. Now, however, it is a multi-disciplined sector, providing the opportunity to integrate key social and environmental pillars to restore values that are being slowly forgotten in the developed world. Managers of modern tourist products treat tourists not only as customers, but also as guests who want to fulfil their dreams through unforgettable experiences which satisfy the highest human need for self-realisation. The global economy has also adapted to this changing need. In 1998, Pine and Gilmore coined a new term for a modern economic offering – the “experience economy” or the “economy of adventure”. This concept is the most recent development in economic evolution and represents an upgrade on an economy that was first based on goods, then products and then services. Since the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage adds meaning to the tourist experience, it is a crucial factor in their planning. In essence, “Dežela kozolcev” (The Land of Hayracks) is not just an outdoor ethnological museum, but also a tourist product that displays and interprets a diverse typography of Slovenian cultural heritage in one place. A qualitative content analysis and a quantitative survey research were conducted on a random population of Slovenian museum visitors to ascertain how well modern tourist trends had been incorporated. The study revealed that the managers of “Dežela kozolcev” tourist products are not well acquainted with the most modern concepts that guarantee high-quality experiences. The experiential level of museum visitors leaned towards aesthetics and theoretical education, whilst the interpretation of heritage had an opposite, negative effect on the aesthetic dimension. This research represents a starting point for further analyses and academic studies on sustainable tourism development in Slovenia.
