Title:Epilepsy in children and adolescents
Abstract:Introduction, purpose: Epilepsy often affects the quality of a child's life. It manly affects the psychological, social and professional elements. It’s a disease which affects the brain. The purpose of this diploma paper is to research how a nurse can improve the child’s activity in the environment and which are the care problems that affect the daily activities in a life of a boy. Research methods: Qualitative research method was used, as a part of which the open type interview was used. The questions for the interview were drafted on the basis of functional patterns of behaviour by Marjory Gordon. A boy with epilepsy was a part of the research. Results: It was established that the most common problems which children with epilepsy are facing are the fear of not being accepted in society or school, the fear of drowning, danger of falling, physical impairment and epilepsy diagnosis ignorance. It was also established that for children with epilepsy it is still harder to include into society in comparison with the rest who have no health problems. Discussion and conclusion: Epilepsy most commonly occurs in childhood and it has a great impact on the quality of life. Distress which children and parents are facing is long-lasting and it demands special treatment. That is why it is important that the family and the society accept the child with epilepsy as a whole and not as a person with limitations.
