Title:Foreign language vocabulary in primary schools
Abstract:In the master's thesis, we introduce the vocabulary acquisition of the first foreign language among pupils attending regular and bilingual primary schools in Pomurje. In the theoretical part, we present bilingualism and bilingual education in Slovenia. Since the selected bilingual and regular primary schools are located near the Austrian border, we present German as the first foreign language in the thesis. Next, how the first foreign language is taught and the purpose of teaching German is introduced. Then, the vocabulary acquisition, the strategies of the vocabulary acquisition, and the learning of vocabulary in German lessons are presented. In the empirical part of the master's thesis we tested the German vocabulary among the pupils attending regular and bilingual primary schools in Pomurje. The pupils were tested with the help of a description of an image, using German. We were interested, whether there is a difference between the first and second test, and which students have a wider vocabulary in German. We used the descriptive and causal non-experimental method of empirical pedagogical research in the study. The study involved 78 pupils from three regular and three bilingual primary schools. The results showed that pupils made progress after the second examination and that there are differences in language skills among pupils attending regular and bilingual. The bilingual pupils often used sentences to describe the images, while regular ones used simple words. We were also interested in gender differences. The results showed a better performance of girls.
Keywords:foreign language, German, bilingualism, elementary school, gender, description of an image.
