Title:The Challenges of Translating African-American Vernacular English Based on Retranslations of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird into Slovene
Abstract:Translating literary texts written in standard language is challenging mainly because of the differences between the source language and culture and the target language and culture. Hence, translating texts that also contain non-standard linguistic variety or are primarily in a non-standard variety is even more challenging. In the thesis we focus on African American Vernacular English, a social dialect and a non-standard language variety of English which contains distinctive features and is often used by authors to convey social, cultural and geographic differences among the characters. If the translator decides to keep this non-standard linguistic variety, then at least some characteristics need to be transferred into the target language and culture by using different translation strategies. Certain terms referring to race or colour of skin can also pose translation challenges, since they are deeply rooted in the African American community and its culture in the United States and are not present only in African American literature. We analysed how and if the primary characteristics of African American Vernacular English were transferred into the Slovene translations of the novels The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird. As both novels were translated twice, we also made a comparative analysis of the translations. The focus is primarily on translation strategies used for rendering African American non-standard linguistic variety into Slovene and differences between the translations. For some examples we also provided an alternative translation.
