Title:Correlation of social factors with anxiety and depression among the elderly
Abstract:Depression and anxiety are in many instances comorbid among all generations, including the elderly, who are at higher risk for the co-occurrence of both states. Social isolation plays an important role in the development of depression and anxiety, while mental health in old age can be maintained through social factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of social factors, anxiety and depression among the elderly, and to compare its manifestation in home and institutional environments. The study predicted that the elderly in the home environment would exhibit a higher correlation of anxiety and depression in relation to spouse’s death and contact with children, whereas the elderly in the institutional environment would demonstrate a higher correlation of both states in relation to non-community involvement and dissatisfaction with friendship. 108 adults aged 65 years and older participated in the study. The sample was separated into two groups; one in a home environment (N = 52) and one in an institutional environment (N = 56). The results of the research showed that anxiety and depression were typically correlated among the elderly. The observed groups were seen to exhibit anxiety and depression to the same extent. The elderly in the institutional environment did not experience more anxiety or depression in comparison with the group in the home environment. Spouse’s death did not have a significant correlation to anxiety or depression. Regular contact with children has a significant correlation to anxiety or depression in the home environment, while we have not found any differences between home and institutional environment. Non-community involvement had significant correlation to depression in both environments, but there was no significant difference between the groups. Dissatisfaction with friendship was the only criteria to show a difference between the studied environments. The results of the research imply that the differences in the correlation of anxiety, depression and selected social factors are not dependent upon home and institutional environments, with the exception of dissatisfaction with friendship that was seen to have a statistically higher correlation to anxiety in the institutional environment.
