Abstract:Izhodišča: Gestacijski diabetes je sodobna bolezen nosečnic.

Title:Balanced diet for pregnant women with gestational diabetes
Abstract:Background: Gestational diabetes is a modern disease of pregnant women. It develops increasingly in pregnant women who are overweight and have an unhealthy lifestyle. It is important that pregnant women are aware of the impact of gestational diabetes on their children. Therefore, it is necessary for them to change their lifestyle. The first change in lifestyle is a balanced healthy diet. The purpose of the thesis was to present a balanced diet to pregnant women with gestational diabetes and the role of nurses in this regard. Research: In this thesis descriptive method and quantitative research methodology were used. To acquire the necessary data, we used an anonymous questionnaire which involved 50 respondents with gestational diabetes, who attend the diabetes clinic. Results: The results of the questionnaire showed that all the respondents agreed that the nurse provided the majority of information on the balanced diet of pregnant women with gestational diabetes. The answers to the questions referring to food diversity show that more than 50% of the respondents consume fruit and vegetables twice a day. The same percentage of the respondents pay attention to the nutrition and 38% to the glycemic index of the food consumed. According to the acquired data, 18% of the respondents do not consider the directions referring to a healthy balanced diet. Conclusion: A nurse has an important role in teaching pregnant women with gestational diabetes about a healthy balanced diet. However, our research has established that despite the sufficient amount of information on a healthy balanced diet provided, the respondents do not follow all the instructions, which can lead to health problems of the pregnant women as well as the children. Therefore, pregnant women with gestational diabetes should be informed on the importance of a healthy balanced diet more frequently
