Abstract:V zadnjih desetletjih se zaradi povečanih migracijskih tokov v vrtce in šole vključuje vse več otrok priseljencev. Diplomsko delo z naslovom Razvijanje strpnosti do priseljencev preko slikanice v predšolskem obdobju vsebuje teoretični in praktični del. Nekaj besed smo namenili temu, kako v naši državi poskrbimo in vključujemo otroke priseljence v vzgojo in izobraževanje.

Title:Developing tolerance toward immigrants throuh a picture book in the pres-school period
Abstract:Due to increased migration flows in recent decades the number of migrant children is increasing in kindergartens and schools. The diploma thesis with the title Developing Tolerance towards Immigrants through a Picture Book in the Preschool Years comprises a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part focuses on the immigrants living in Slovenia, their lifestyle and their struggle are described how to all of a sudden accept a foreign country as their new home. There are a couple of sentences devoted to describing the issue of how the Slovenian government is taking care of the immigrant children and their integration process into the Slovenian educational system. In everyday life much prejudice and discrimination can be seen and felt, which is described in the thesis, and the thesis also emphasises tolerance by illustrating examples of how to present tolerance and develop it with children in the preschool years. Immigrant children are confronted with the new (foreign) language upon their arrival to their new country, which can cause a lot of trouble for them. For this reason, this thesis gives some suggestions how to introduce the Slovenian language to immigrant children in Slovenia by using the most child-friendly and positive approach. A part of the theoretical part is dedicated to a picture book which is presented in the thesis on the basis of five different authors. Picture books are really welcomed in kindergartens, since they are used to explain answers to many various questions asked by preschool children. In the chapter Tolerance in case of contemporary youth literature some literary works of youth literature are listed which contribute to making children aware of interculturalism and diversity being present among us and to provide developing tolerance to such diversity in kindergartens. In conclusion, a few sentences are devoted to diversity and how this virtue is being shown to children through a picture book. To provide intercultural education in kindergartens we have selected the following picture books: Elmer (McKee 1995), Kulturna izmenjava (Eng. Cultural Exchange) (Isol 2014), Žabec in tujec (Eng. Frog and the Stranger) (Velthuijs 1997), Moji odeji (Eng. My two Blankets) (Kobald 2014) and Drugačen (Eng. Different) (Cave 2001). We have selected these picture books because they are the most appropriate for this age level of children, and also because they meet the criteria of our work. The practical part of the thesis was made in a kindergarten which is really specific in terms of its children population. This population is strongly affected by immigrants coming from ex-Yugoslavia. There are five hypotheses in the thesis, which were based on the selected picture books confirmed or rejected. Each of the selected picture books is described and the activity plan is provided for each book. The same model is used for the analysis of all five picture books, and this model as indicated in the book Poetika slikanice (Eng. Poetry of Picture Book). The picture books selected for intercultural education in kindergartens were analysed, their content was summarised and some selected illustrations were described. The front cover of each picture book, its bookbinding, the internal cover of the book, and the relation between the text and the illustrations are described. We also focused on literary elements in the picture book and a set of prior written questions for children before and after telling each story of the book. After the story had been told, various activities were performed with children, and at the end we analysed the topic all together.
