Title:RELEASE OF PRISONERS WHO HAVE SERVED THEIR SENTENCE
Abstract:The purpose of the graduation thesis was to examine how release of convicts from prison after serving prison sentence influences their post-penal assistance with a goal to identify and analyse whether the convicts after release receive various treatments (what kind and to what extent), and whether they were in prison timely and systematically prepared for release. The emphasis of the graduation thesis is mainly on stigmatization of the prisoner and consequences of punishment, where they are offered post-penal assistance for easier overcoming of obstacles. Post-penal assistance´s basic purpose is to train the convict to help themselves in case of problems that occur after the release, and enabling integration to normal life at large. In the graduation thesis, we therefore conducted a survey on convicts´ standpoints on post-penal assistance in Dob correctional facility. The survey took place among the convicts in Dob prison using a questionnaire, which encompassed all questions on convicts´ opinion in regard to post-penal assistance, its successfulness, and convicts´ expectations after the served prison sentence. It was established that, in convicts´ opinion, rehabilitation with various treatments is successful. Further, the survey reveals that prisons systematically and timely prepare the convicts for release and integration in life after the release. In doing so, they use all theoretically and legislatively intended forms of preparations of convicts for release. Accordingly, the convicts believe they do not expect major problems after release at large, where they will get employment and will be accepted regardless of the served prison sentence. It was also established that the convicts remain in contact with family and friends and are accepted by them. The majority of convicts also endeavour to build their personality and want different way of thinking, but that depends on each individual. In any case, in the future it would be sensible to conduct a survey also after the actual release of prisoners, in which we would obtain even clearer picture on actual successfulness of post-penal assistance, since the expectations can differ from actual situation, which can be faced by the convicts after the release from prison.
