Abstract:Izhodišča: Nenadni srčni zastoj je glavni vzrok umrljivosti v svetu.

Title:USE OF AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR IN POLICE CARS
Abstract:Background: Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of mortality in the world. Early defibrillation is very important, that means that non-medical professional services are crucial because they are closer to the people compared to a team of emergency medical services. The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of a police officer as the first responder in interventions with sudden cardiac arrest. Methodology: The study was held at one of the police stations in north-eastern Slovenia. We used a questionnaire and the control document as part of an objective structured practical examination that included questions regarding basic life support and the use of an automated external defibrillator to retrieve the data. Results: Analysis of data obtained from 51 police officers showed that they were eligible to be first responders. Forty-one (80%) police officers would be willing to perform basic resuscitation procedures using an automated external defibrillator. Police officers showed interest for such implementation although this would increase their workload. We proved that education significantly improves knowledge of police officers (p = 0,001). Discussion: The studies highlight the importance of early defibrillation in sudden cardiac arrest outside the hospital. In our study we demonstrated that the police officers were eligible as first responders, as their knowledge of basic resuscitation procedures using an automated external defibrillator is satisfactory and increases after education.
