Title:Pinter's The Caretaker in Two German Translations

Abstract:The focus of the thesis lies on the linguistic and stylistic comparison of Pinter’s drama The Caretaker and two German translations by Willy H. Thiem, Der Hausmeister, from 1961 and the more contemporary German translation by Michael Walter from 2005. The aim of the thesis is to examine how and to what extent have the characteristics of Pinter’s style been preserved in the two German translations. The thesis is composed of eight chapters; chapter one is introductory and defines basic terminology used in the thesis and provides purpose of the thesis. Chapter two presents the life and work of Harold Pinter. Chapter three is subdivided into two parts and offers the analysis of The Caretaker, the plot, characters, relationships and action and provides information on German translations of Pinter’s plays and how they were presented on German stages. Chapter four is divided into two parts; the first part focuses on translation of literary style in general and the second on translation of drama in particular. Chapter five presents Pinter’s stylistic features. Chapter six is subdivided in five parts and discusses different stylistic shifts in the German translation: repetition, obsolescence of certain expressions, alliteration, colloquialism, register and manner of address. The analysis of examples taken from the original text and the translations shows to what extent have Pinter’s stylistic devices been preserved in the two German translations. Also commentary and further suggestions for the translation into German are offered. Conclusions are drawn in chapter seven; the comparison of Pinter’s drama The Caretaker and two German translations shows that there are some discrepancies in the application of Pinter’s stylistic devices in the translation; many stylistic shifts occur, and the two translators, in most cases, do not consider Pinter’s significant stylistic elements in their translations. In chapter eight the works that have been used for the research are listed.

Title:Pinterjev Hišnik v dveh nemških prevodih
Abstract:Diplomsko delo predstavlja jezikovno in slogovno primerjavo dramskega teksta Harolda Pinterja Hišnik z dvema nemškima prevodoma, prvim nemškim prevodom Willyja H. Thiema iz leta 1961 in sodobnejšim prevodom Michaela Walterja iz leta 2005. Cilj naloge je ugotoviti, kako in v kolikšni meri so Pinterjeve slogovne značilnosti ohranjene v nemških prevodih. Naloga je razdeljena na osem poglavij, prvo poglavje je uvodno in poda nekaj osnovnih informacij o namenu in poteku diplomske naloge. Drugo poglavje predstavi življenje in delo Harolda Pinterja. Tretje poglavje je razdeljeno na dva dela, v prvem delu so predstavljeni analiza, vsebina, dramske osebe in odnosi v Hišniku, v drugem delu pa informacije o nemških prevodih Hišnika in njihovem sprejemanju na nemških odrih. Četrto poglavje je razdeljeno na dva dela, prvi del opisuje različne metode prevajanja literarnega sloga, drugi del pa predstavi nekaj idej o prevajanju dramskih del. V petem poglavju so predstavljene Pinterjeve tipične slogovne značilnosti. Šesto poglavje se deli na pet podpoglavij in predstavi različne slogovne premike pri prevajanju Hišnika iz angleščine v nemščino: ponavljanje, zastarelost nekaterih izrazov, aliteracijo, pogovorni jezik in register ter načine drugoosebnega naslavljanja. Analiza in primerjava primerov iz originalnega dela in dveh nemških prevodov kaže, do kolikšne mere so se v prevodih ohranile Pinterjeve slogovne značilnosti. Ponujeni so tudi komentarji in nadaljnji predlogi za izboljšanje nemškega prevoda Hišnika. V sedmem poglavju so predstavljeni zaključki diplomske naloge; primerjava del je pokazala, da prihaja do velikih razlik pri prevajanju originala v nemščino, predvsem do slogovnih premikov, nobeden od prevajalcev pa v svojem prevodu ne upošteva Pinterjevih slogovnih sredstev v zadostni meri. V osmem poglavju so nanizana dela, ki so bila uporabljena pri pisanju diplomske naloge.
